ABOUT

Leon Dobson with MasterChef logo

Working as a sound recordist since September 2022, I have experience on a wide range of media including films, short films, corporate videos, commercials, podcasts and conference events, always maintaining the most professional standards.

Recordings are usually done in 32-bit float, which allows for greater flexibility in post, and in 48khz sample rate. Please let me know if you have any specific recording requirements.

Standard kit for a project includes recorder, boom, radio mics and timecode. I am flexible when it comes to use of extra kit so please get in touch to make arrangements.

A full sound report will be provided at the end of every shoot.

Sound is a great passion of mine and I enjoy striving for the best possible quality.

BACKGROUND AND EDUCATION

Born in London, my journey as a sound recordist starts at school where I developed a great passion for music, sound and creativity. I went on to study music at the University of Birmingham, graduating in 2021 with a 2.1 and a thorough grounding in music history, composition and sound design with the use of software such as Sibelius and Reaper.

After moving to London, I enrolled for the filmmaking certificate at the London Film Academy, where I learned about filmmaking from scratch: writing a script, storyboarding, producing, casting actors, shooting and editing. This experience solidified my desire to work in film and creative media.

Shortly after this in August 2022 I secured a full-time runner position on the studio set of MasterChef for two series (Young MasterChef Series 1 and MasterChef Series 19) where I learned about television, how to work with talent, crew, and production, and gained experience in tech roles and handling equipment.

Around this time I met my mentor, fellow sound recordist Solomon Watkins, who trained me in location recording techniques, protocols and passed on his wealth of knoweldge and experience to me.

In 2023 I left MasterChef and undertook a further course in sound recording theory and practice at the London Film School to fill in any gaps and gain further advice from other sound professionals.

I have now been working full-time as a freelance sound recordist for the past year, travelling around the UK, meeting many wonderful and creative people, and discovering my ever increasing creative ambitions and passion for sound.

Currently, I am continuing to strengthen my skills and explore new avenues, particularly in audio post-production and audio-visual work as well as web design (this website was made entirely from scratch using html, css, and javascript).
